It's a blog!Winter has hit Wellington -- it's dark when I get up and dark when I leave work. And here's this week's weather forecast:

At least it's not the bone-chilling cold that New Zealanders insist doesn't exist here which is why they don't insulate their houses or install any modern heating methods.
After more than two years in New Zealand, maybe it's time for a bit of reflection. Here are my overriding impressions of NZ now that I've been here for a while.
- A refreshing lack of consumerism.
- Overpriced goods -- even local stuff.
- Friendly people and well-behaved dogs.
- Tall-poppy syndrome which seems to result in low standards for all.
- Excessive drinking.
- A feeling of closeness with the land/environment.
- A feeling of being out-of-the-loop in world events, which is sometimes relieving and sometimes frustrating.
